Devotional: Make Disciples!

You Are Called to Lead! Make Disciples!

“Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” Matthew 28: 16-20

Psalm 78 gives marching orders to leaders. Be sure that you pass the baton. The next generation must know God and his word. Faithfulness across generations is dependent on each generation teaching the next the praiseworthy deeds of our God.

Jesus made the mission, for those whom he has called to lead, clear. The mission was the climax to his earthly story – Go to the nations! Make disciples! Teach them what it means to live faithfully and obediently! And I promise to be with you and equip you for your mission.

A noted rabbi once said, “No one should live without a rabbi. No one should die without disciples.”

What a blessing, challenge, and opportunity it is for Christian school leaders to make disciples. It is our calling to be like our Father in heaven and like Jesus so that those whom we shepherd want to be like him too!

But it is not enough to lead the flock to become spectators in the kingdom of God. The next generation of disciples must become equipped to follow and to lead. We are called to make disciples so that those disciples will also make disciples.

We are like links in God’s chain. We are connected in the chain by the links that came before us to prepare us. We are links in the chain to insure that the links which follow us in the chain are strong. The chain must not be broken, because generations which come after us, and are not yet born, depend on us.

May God use each of you, whom he has called to lead, to make disciples and strengthen the chain to the Father for the generations!
