US Memorial Day

Memorial DayI choose not to say “Happy Memorial Day”. My dad was a Korean War veteran and our closest neighbor lost a son and brother in World War II. Memories of war were not so happy.

I also recall the honor of marching in Memorial Day parades in high school. As a trumpeter I had the honor of playing Taps at the local cemetery as a senior. Even then, it was humbling as we remembered those who gave their lives to defend freedom.

I encourage all of us to pause and to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and also those who are sacrificing time and family today, as they serve to defend the freedoms that we all too easily take for granted.
